Anemia is a problem of not having enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin to carry oxygen to the body’s tissues. While Anemia can be due to several causes, anemia due to nutritional causes is the topic of this program. Hemoglobin is a protein found in red cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all other organs in the body. Having anemia can cause tiredness, weakness and shortness of breath. Anemia is associated with a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, decreased physical performance and quality of life, and increased risk of falls and fractures. Also, the presence of anemia is associated with longer hospital stays and an increased risk of mortality related to cardiovascular disease.
